Enroll in AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance

All international students enrolled at UT Austin with an immigration status of F- or J- (who do not hold U.S. citizenship) are automatically billed for health insurance via their student tuition bill and do not need to submit a health insurance enrollment form.

Please follow the instructions below if you wish to purchase continuation coverage (for graduating students), if you wish to add optional dental or vision care coverage, or if you'd like to enroll your dependents (your spouse or children) through Academic Health Plans (AHP). Dependents of students with an immigration status of F- or J- are not required to be enrolled in insurance coverage through AHP; you may select the appropriate medical insurance policy that meets your needs and budget.

Instructions

Go to the Academic Health Plans online enrollment page

  • If you are graduating, you may purchase three months of "Continuation Coverage," provided you meet eligibility requirements.
  • Click on "International & ESL Students" to add optional dental or vision coverage. (Note: you will pay AHP directly for these insurance premiums, and you will need to enroll in this optional coverage each semester.)
  • If you would like to enroll your dependents in coverage through AHP:
    • If you are not employed in a benefits eligible position at UT Austin, click on "Dependent Coverage" under the "International & ESL Students" heading.
      • You will need to re-enroll your dependents each term you wish to continue their coverage through AHP.
    • If you are employed in a benefits eligible position at UT Austin (TA/GRA), you may be able to enroll your dependents through your hiring department. Texas Global does not administer insurance for UT Austin employees, so please contact your departmental Human Resources coordinator for assistance as soon as possible to ensure compliance with enrollment deadlines.

For additional guidance, download the Online Enrollment Student Experience Guide (PDF) and follow the guidelines provided.

Important: The International Insurance Team does not process enrollment in optional vision or dental care and cannot assist with dependent enrollment. Our office can only enroll and assist current UT Austin students with an active F- or J- immigration status. For assistance, please contact AHP directly via the chat feature on the AHP website. Their team will provide step-by-step guidance on how to complete the process.

J-1 Faculty & Scholars

Visiting faculty and scholars are eligible to purchase the AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance Plan during their stay in the U.S. The minimum purchase available is one month of coverage. Follow the instructions listed above and choose the Visiting Scholars Enrollment tab.

You may choose any start date for coverage to take effect, but please note that insurance can be purchased only in one month increments, and you must pay for the full month of coverage regardless of policy start and end dates.

When choosing your coverage dates, please remember that J-1 faculty and scholars are required to have coverage until the end of the current semester or the end of their program (whichever is sooner).
