ISSS offers many services for our students and scholars. If you would like to speak with an advisor, select the correct service below for information on how to schedule an appointment with one of our highly trained staff members. 

Special Note: There are separate advising services for regular degree-seeking students, exchange students, sponsored students, English language students, and international faculty and scholars. Be sure you are selecting the correct service type before schedule an advising appointment. If you are a UT Austin student interested in pursuing a study abroad program, please refer to Education Abroad Advising.

Texas Global Front Desk

Location: 2400 Nueces St., Suite B.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. 

Services: The front desk can assist with general questions and previously scheduled document pick-ups. The front desk is staffed by non-advisors and cannot provide immigration advising. 


International Student Advising (non-J-1 visa)

International students are degree-seeking students who attend UT in F-1 status and are served by the ISSS student immigration advising team. Student immigration advisors can help with F-1 on/off campus employment authorization, F-1 immigration status maintenance, F-1 enrollment requirements, general F-1 immigration questions, and more. Student immigration advisors can also assist students in other immigration categories (H-4, L-2, TD, etc.) with general (non-immigration-specific) information as well as with the process of changing their status to F-1.

J-1 Student Advising

J-1 students are degree-seeking students who attend UT on a J-1 student visa and DS-2019, and are served by the ISSS sponsored and exchange programs team. Sponsored and exchange student advisors assist with immigration matters including Academic Training employment authorization, immigration status maintenance, general immigration questions, and more. 

The sponsored and exchange programs team offers remote advising via Zoom and in-person appointment options. If you need an appointment and don't see one available, contact hotline@austin.utexas.edu and indicate you are in need of a “J-1 Student Advising Appointment”.

Sponsored Student Advising

Sponsored Students are individuals who are funded by a U.S./foreign government, company, or organization which utilizes 3rd party billing and have signed billing agreements with Texas Global. Sponsored students are served by the ISSS sponsored and exchange programs team. The sponsored student advisor assists with issues involving immigration, financial sponsorship and billing, general insurance and tax questions, and also advises students on questions related to academic progress and personal considerations.

Exchange Student Advising

Exchange students are non-degree seeking students who attend the university for one to two semesters only, and served by the ISSS sponsored and exchange programs team. Sponsored and exchange student advisors assist with immigration-related matters, on/off-campus employment authorization options, the signing of home university documents, questions related to academic enrollment, and more.

English Language Center Student Advising

  • Travel Signatures on I-20s or DS-2019s
  • Employment Verification Letter for social security numbers
  • Enrollment Verification Letter
  • English Language Center Transcripts & Grade Reports
  • Copies of Receipts or Tuition Payments
  • Signatures on Transfer-In Forms
  • Reprint of lost or stolen I-20s or DS-2019s

International Faculty and Scholar Advising

International faculty and scholars teach and/or conduct research at UT on a J-1/H1-B/TN/E-3 visa or are in Permanent Resident status. International faculty and scholars are served by the ISSS faculty and scholar advising team. Faculty and scholar advisors provide remote advising via Zoom and in-person appointment options for the following matters: 

  • J-1 Scholar Orientation - Required for all arriving visiting researchers, professors, and other scholars in J-1 status. Scholars should sign up for orientation upon arrival in the United States via myIO.
  • Individual Advising Appointment for Faculty and Scholars - For UT faculty members and scholars in the following statuses: J-1, H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT. Note that advising for those in F-1 OPT status is reserved for faculty members and scholars who are not on a UT I-20.
  • Individual Advising Appointment for Permanent Residency and O-1 Petitions - For university-sponsored I-140 and O-1 petitions.

Insurance Assistance

  • For assistance with insurance questions please email the Insurance Team at intlinsurance@austin.utexas.edu. Please include your EID in all correspondence.
  • Completed Insurance Waiver Requests can be submitted following the guidance on the Waiving the Student Health Insurance Plan | Texas Global (utexas.edu) page. You DO NOT need to make an appointment unless you have questions about the waiver process.
  • Insurance Waiver Requests may take two weeks for processing. Please do not make appointments to check the status of your waiver request. To check if your waiver request has been approved, view your tuition and fee bill. If you see insurance charges on your tuition and fee bill on the 11th class day (Fall/Spring) or 3rd class day (Summer), please contact the Insurance Team immediately.
