Scholarships and Financial Services
Texas Global offers various scholarships and financial assistance opportunities to international students enrolled at UT Austin. Scholarship notifications for Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 will be made in mid to late December. Scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year will open on February 1 and close March 1, 2024. Texas Global Scholarships
Scholarship applications are open twice a year, once in the Spring for the following academic year (i.e. – Spring 2024 applications are for the Fall 2024 – Summer 2025 academic year) and once in the Fall for the remainder of the academic year (i.e. – Fall 2023 applications will be for both the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semester). Specific eligibility requirements and additional details are included below under each scholarship title.
Recipients of endowed student scholarships are required to submit a thank you letter and testimonial video upon being awarded the scholarship. Funding will not be applied to recipients' accounts until the thank you letter is received.
Please review the eligibility and application of each scholarship carefully.
Fall 2023 applications (for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters):
- Carlos and Clara Quintanilla Scholarship
The Carlos and Clara Quintanilla Scholarship is a $5,000 spring 2024 tuition scholarship, which will recognize an undergraduate international student enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Additional criteria information can be found below.
Application Details
The application for the spring 2024 Carols and Clara Quintanilla Scholarship will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023. The endowment outlines the following eligibility and preference criteria for students:
- You are an undergraduate student currently enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering.
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- You are enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024).
- You resided in Mexico for at least ten years prior to enrolling in the Cockrell School of Engineering.
- You are in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- You intend to return to Mexico post-graduation for work.
- Dr. David Nilsson Scholarship
The Dr. David Nilsson Scholarship is a $2,000 tuition scholarship for the spring 2024 semester, which will recognize an undergraduate student who graduated from a high school in Mexico. Additional criteria information can be found below.
Application Details
The application for the spring 2024 Dr. David Nilsson Scholarship will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023. The endowment outlines the following eligibility and preference criteria for students:
- You are an undergraduate student and enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- Graduated from a high school in Mexico and intends to return to Mexico after graduation for work.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- You must have completed two academic semesters at UT Austin.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Preference will be given to students who:
- Graduated from a high school in Tejupilco or the state of Querétaro.
- Ethel Loving de Diaz Scholarship
The Ethel Loving de Diaz Scholarship is a $4,500 tuition scholarship for the Spring 2024, which will recognize an undergraduate or graduate student who has resided for a period of time or matriculated from the Republic of Mexico and has worked to fund their education. Additional criteria information can be found below.
Application Details
The application for the Spring 2024 Ethel Loving de Diaz Scholarship will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023. The endowment outlines the following eligibility and preference criteria for students:
- You are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- Have resided for a period of time or matriculated from the Republic of Mexico.
- Have a cumulative GPA above 2.0 for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
- Demonstrate financial need.
Preference will be given to students who:
- Demonstrate how work experience has helped you fund your education.
- Identify as first-generation.
- Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE) Scholarship
The Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE) Scholarship is a $3,500 spring 2024 tuition award, which will recognize an undergraduate or graduate student who has lived in or matriculated from Iran or has been the dependent of individuals who have lived in Iran for the majority of their lives. Additional criteria information can be found below.
Application Details
The application for the Spring 2024 Society of Iranian-American Women for Education Scholarship will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023. The endowment outlines the following eligibility and preference criteria for students:
- You are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- You have lived in or matriculated from Iran or have been a dependent of individuals who have lived in Iran for the majority of their lives.
- You must have completed an entire course of study for two academic semesters at UT Austin.
Preference will be given to students who:
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates or 3.75 for graduate students and maintain the minimum GPA for the duration of the award.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- General ISSS Financial Aid
The General ISSS Financial Aid scholarship is a *cash scholarship that provides assistance to students who demonstrate financial need. This scholarship will be a $4,000 award in the Spring and a $2,500 award in the summer. If you have already been awarded the General ISSS Financial Aid scholarship for the 23-24 academic year, do not reapply. Additional criteria information can be found below.
*General ISSS Financial Aid is only available for formula-funded courses (Option I) and Option III students are not eligible. View additional information about Option III programs.
*All cash awards will automatically apply to any outstanding UT debts upon disbursement. Award amounts in excess of debts will be distributed to the student's direct deposit account.
*14% of the scholarship will be withheld for tax purposes per US tax law, unless a tax treaty for scholarships is in effect or the recipient is considered a resident alien for tax purposes.
Application Details
This application will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023 for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. Eligibility criteria:
- You are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024 and/or Summer 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- You must have completed an entire course of study for two academic semesters at UT Austin.
- Have a cumulative GPA above 2.0 for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- International Education Fee Scholarship (IEFS)
The International Education Fee Scholarship (IEFS) was initially established in 1989 by a student referendum. This scholarship is a one-time $5,000 cash scholarship for the Spring 2024 semester. Students who received the IEFS scholarship for Fall 2023 will have to reapply to be considered for the Spring 2024 scholarship. Current and newly admitted undergraduate and graduate international students are eligible to apply. Additional criteria information can be found below.
*All cash awards will automatically apply to any outstanding UT debts upon disbursement. Award amounts in excess of debts will be distributed to the student's direct deposit account.
*14% of the scholarship will be withheld for tax purposes per US tax law, unless a tax treaty for scholarships is in effect or the recipient is considered a resident alien for tax purposes.
Application Details
This application will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023 for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. Eligibility criteria:
- You are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semester (Spring 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- Are in good academic standing with the university.
Preference will be given to students who:
- Have faced significant barriers in accessing education in their home country.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS)
The Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) waivers the nonresident portion of a student's tuition bill (the student will still receive a tuition bill). This is not a cash award. This application period is for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. If you have already been awarded for the 23-24 academic year, you do not need to reapply for the 24-24 academic year.
This application is for both first-time TAMS applicants and students looking to apply for renew their TAMS scholarship. This waiver can be renewed annually provided that the recipient completes the TAMS application, maintains eligibility, and graduates in a timely manner. Renewal of the award is not guaranteed and depends on the number of awards available and continued demonstration of financial need. Additional criteria information can be found below.
*The Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) waiver is only available for formula-funded courses (Option I) and Option III students are not eligible. Additional information about Option III programs can be found here.
Application Details (first-time applicants)
This application will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023 for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. Eligibility criteria:
- You must be a legal and permanent resident of Mexico.
- You are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time at UT Austin during the award semesters (Spring 2024 and Summer 2024).
- You are on a non-immigrant visa and classified as an international student at UT Austin.
- Students who are refugees are not eligible to apply.
- Students who are eligible for FAFSA or TASFA are not eligible to apply.
- Have a cumulative GPA above 2.0 for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
Application Details (renewal applicants)
This application will be available from October 1 - November 1, 2023 for the Spring 2024 and Summer 2024 semesters. Eligibility criteria:
- You are continuing towards the same degree level since the TAMS waiver was initially awarded.
- Note: If you are graduating in the Spring or Summer, and continuing on a Master's or Ph.D. degree at UT Austin, you are no longer eligible to renew your TAMS award. You must submit an initial TAMS application for further consideration.
- Have a cumulative GPA above 2.0 for undergraduate students and a 3.0 GPA for graduate students.
Spring 2024 applications (for the 2024-2025 academic year):
- African Leadership Bridge Endowed Scholarship
The African Leadership Bridge Endowment Scholarship is a $5,000 award with a tuition waiver (of the nonresident portion of a student's tuition bill) for the 23-24 academic year. This award will recognize an undergraduate international student from who demonstrates a passion for the continent and an intention to further growth, development, and leadership on the African continent. This award is intended for international students with financial need who received all or part of their preparatory education on the African continent. The award will be divided in half, with $2,500 being disbursed for the Fall 2023 semester, and $2,500 being disbursed for the Spring 2024 semester.
The African Leadership Bridge (ALB) was formed in 2007 and is a registered non-profit corporation. ALB's vision is to help prepare leaders who will create an Africa in which all citizens have an opportunity to realize their potential. ALB champions the next generation of African leaders through sustainable scholarships and a strong support network to provide the tools and experience needed to drive change in the African continent.

This application is currently closed and will open in Spring 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to the application, the following criteria must be met and included with your application:
- You must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled at UT Austin.
- You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- You must be able to demonstrate financial need.
- You must have received all or part of your preparatory education on the African continent.
- Iimura Peace Endowed Scholarship
The Iimura Peace Endowed Scholarship is a $5,000 fall award that recognizes an international student with intent to promote peace in Asia. This award is intended for international undergraduate students from Asia with preference given to students who lived or attended school in East Asia or students who have lived or attended school in Asia.
Application Details
This application is currently closed and will open in Spring 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to the application, the following criteria must be met and included with your application:
- You must be an undergraduate student
- You must be registered as a full-time student at UT Austin during the semester in which the scholarship is awarded.
- You must have been a resident of or attended school in East Asia or Asia in general.
- You must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- You must be willing to complete a Service Project within one year of receiving the scholarship.
Please note that if awarded, there is a required service project for this scholarship.
- Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship
The Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship is a $3,500 fall tuition award that recognizes an undergraduate international student who has demonstrated leadership in their undergraduate program through academic achievement; participation in campus and community organizations - particularly in leadership roles, and has made positive contributions to the campus community.

This application is currently closed and will open in Spring 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to the application, the following criteria must be met and included with your application:
- You must be classified as an undergraduate international student at UT Austin.
- You must have completed a full course of study for two academic semesters at UT Austin by the time the award is disbursed. Note: Concurrent enrollment at another school does not count toward full-time hours.
- Your GPA must be at least 3.25
- You must demonstrate active participation or leadership in campus/community organizations and activities.
- You must be attending classes at UT Austin during the period that financial aid is awarded.
- You must hold a non-immigrant visa.
- Khalid Alhilali Memorial Scholarship
The Khalid Alhilali Memorial Scholarship is a $2,500 fall 2023 award recognizing an undergraduate international student who received all or part of their preparatory education in the Middle East.
The scholarship is funded by an endowment created by four sisters, including two Longhorn alumnae, in honor of their late father Khalid Abdul Mehdi “Al” Alhilali. Khalid excelled in school from an early age in Baghdad. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Imperial College in London on a full scholarship, he moved to the United States to attend graduate school at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Alhilali believed in the significance of education to achieving one’s dreams, and in the importance of supporting others as one achieves success. Application Details
This application is currently closed and will open in Spring 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition to the application, the following criteria must be met and included with your application:
- You must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled at UT Austin.
- You must undertake a full-time course load at UT Austin during the fall semester, during which the scholarship is awarded.
- You must have completed part or all of your preparatory school in the Middle East.
- You must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- You must be able to demonstrate financial need.
- General ISSS Financial Aid
The General ISSS Financial Aid award provides $4,000 per semester for the fall and spring semesters and $2,500 in the summer semester in cash assistance* for international students who demonstrate financial need. This is a competitive process as the number of awards allotted per semester is limited. Only international students who have completed at least 2 semesters at UT by the time the award is disbursed are eligible to apply for this award. A full list of eligibility criteria is available within the application itself.
The general financial aid awarded by ISSS does not provide a waiver of the nonresident portion of a student’s tuition & fee bill.
*All cash awards will be automatically applied to any outstanding UT debts upon disbursement. Award amount in excess of debts will be distributed to the student's direct deposit account.

- International Education Fee Scholarship
The International Education Fee (IEF) Scholarship was initially established in 1989 by a student referendum. The IEF Scholarship supports scholarships for both incoming international students and outbound students studying abroad.

- Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS)
The Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) award provides a waiver of the nonresident portion of a student's tuition bill. The TAMS award is not a cash award. To be eligible for the TAMS award, you must be a citizen and resident of Mexico who demonstrates financial need. Receiving the TAMS award is not guaranteed as the application is competitive due to the limited number of awards.
New & Continuing students who do not currently have a TAMS award
New or continuing students who qualify and do not currently have a TAMS award need to submit an initial TAMS application.
Continuing students who currently have a TAMS award
Current recipients of the TAMS award must submit a TAMS Renewal Application in order to renew their TAMS award for future years. Renewal of the TAMS award is not guaranteed and is dependent on both the amount of awards available and continued demonstration of financial need.

- Good Neighbor Scholarship
The Good Neighbor Scholarship (GNS) provides an exemption of one year's worth of tuition (fall, spring, and summer) to students who were born in and are residents of a nation in the Western Hemisphere (excluding Cuba and the United States). A full list of eligibility requirements, including eligible nations, can be found within the GNS application. The exemption provided by the Good Neighbor Scholarship does not pay for any fees or charges on the tuition bill, such as health insurance, late registration fees, ISSS Support Services fee, etc. This scholarship is administered through ISSS on behalf of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

UT Austin and Texas Exes Scholarships
Below are scholarships offered through UT Austin or Texas Exes. This is not a comprehensive list of all scholarships offered. We encourage students to contact their departments to see what other scholarships may be available.
- Continuing & Transfer Students Scholarship Application
The UT Scholarship Application for Continuing &Transfer Students is available in November of each year and is used to award students for the following academic year. This online application is strictly for continuing students who are eligible to enroll, transfer students who have been officially admitted or have completed an application for transfer admission AND returning UT students who are applying for readmission to UT.

- Glenn Maloney Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is offered through the Office of the Dean of Students and has been made in memory of Glenn W. Maloney.
Glenn served The University of Texas at Austin for 19 years, the last seven as Associate Dean of Students. The Glenn Maloney Memorial Scholarship was established to remember Glenn's countless contributions to UT Austin and to recognize the students he loved. Through this scholarship, Glenn's enduring legacy is to continue helping the students whose lives he enriched.

- Melih and Selma Selvili Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is offered through Texas Exes and is intended for a Turkish international student, preferably an undergraduate, with outstanding academic credentials.

External Scholarships
Listed below are private foundations that offer scholarship or loan opportunities for international students. Most of these opportunities are offered at a nationwide level (they are not specific to UT).
- The International Peace Scholarship
The International Peace Scholarship Fund is a program which provides grants-in-aid for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. An international scholarship program was initiated by P.E.O. in 1949. The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund was established in 1959. Believing that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding, members of P.E.O. support this program. For more information, please refer to the eligibility requirements and the application calendar.
- Leo S. Rowe Pan American Loan Fund
The Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund is an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS) that helps citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS Member States finance their studies or research in accredited universities across the United States by awarding interest-free loans of up to $15,000. - The PART Austin University of Texas at Austin Scholarship
The Pan American Round Table (PART) of Austin awards the PART Austin University of Texas as Austin Scholarship to an outstanding Latin American undergraduate student enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin. The scholarship is $2,000. For more information, please see their website.
- IEFA Scholarship Search Engine
IEFA's Scholarship Search Engine allows you to search for outside scholarships by country of residence.
Other Financial Services
ISSS can also provide additional financial services and support for international students including third-party billing, limited short-term loans, and CENCOEX letters.
- Sponsored Student Billing
Texas Global provides third-party billing services to sponsored students. Texas Global will pay for all or part of a sponsored student’s tuition and required fees prior to the university's payment deadline, and will then invoice the student's sponsor to collect payment according to the billing schedule. The student is responsible for any amount not covered by the sponsor. The university charges a sponsored student fee per student, per semester. The fee is billed directly to the sponsor and will be included on the invoice for services rendered, including billing and individualized advising services.

- International Wire
Texas Global can accept international wire transfers to pay tuition for students enrolled at the University. Please see the International Wires page for details.
Once the wire has been initiated, the student must email txglobal-internationalwire@austin.utexas.edu. In the email, please include:
- The name and EID of the student
- The amount of the wired amount
- The date sent
This information will be used to claim the wire on the student’s behalf when it arrives at the University’s account. If this information is not included it will be difficult to identify the wire when it arrives which may create a delay in processing your funds.
- Tuition and Emergency Cash Loans
There are two types of institutional loans that international students may access through Texas Global in order to temporarily finance their studies:
- Tuition Loan ($4,000 maximum)
- Emergency Cash Loan ($500 maximum)
Eligibility Requirements for Tuition and Emergency Cash Loans
- Must be enrolled full-time (Undergraduate – 12 hrs; Graduate – 9 hrs)*
- Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA if Undergraduate; 3.0 GPA if Graduate
- Must not have any outstanding financial bars
*Note: Accommodations will be made for students enrolled in Dissertation/Thesis/Report, which fall below full-time enrollment.
Special Considerations
- 4% interest will be charged annually per loan.
- Tuition Loans must be paid back to The University within three months of taking out the loan (two months if done during summer semester).
- Emergency Cash Loans must be paid back to the University within one month of taking out the loan.
- Emergency Cash Loans can not be given if less than 30 days are remaining in the current semester.
- Repayment of a Tuition or Emergency Cash Loan can be completed online on the What I Owe page.
- Failure to pay back a Tuition Loan or Emergency Cash Loan by the specified due date will result in a financial bar placed on the student’s record. A financial bar will prevent grades/transcripts/diplomas issuance and registration for classes. The loan will be turned over to a collection agency and a 25% collection fee will be added to the original amount if the financial bar continues to go unpaid.
- Extensions for loan repayment cannot be requested
How to Apply for a Tuition Loan
Tuition Loans are available through Student Accounts Receivable. Note that the maximum an international student may borrow for a tuition loan is $4,000. Additionally, the promissory note for the tuition loan must be signed in person at the Student Accounts Receivable office located in MAI, Room 8. The remainder of the first installment of the tuition bill must be paid at the time of signing the promissory note.
Note: Student must have a High Assurance EID in order to process an online Tuition Loan.
How to Apply for an Emergency Cash Loan
Please email intlfinaid@austin.utexas.edu with your UT EID and the requested amount for up to $500.
