Costs for Student Health Insurance Plan
Understanding the cost of health insurance is an important part of planning for your studies at the University of Texas at Austin. The AcademicBlue UT Student Health Insurance Plan (UT SHIP) provides comprehensive coverage to meet the needs of UT Austin students at an affordable rate.
Upon registering for classes, all international students enrolled at UT who hold an F- or J- immigration status are automatically enrolled in UT SHIP, and the cost of the plan is directly charged to the student's tuition bill.
Students can opt out of this plan only if they submit a waiver by the stated deadline and that request is approved. See the Waiving the AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance Plan page for eligibility details and waiver instructions.
Once charged, student tuition bills will reflect insurance-related fees under the following line items:
- Health Insurance: This includes the fees for both Medical Insurance and Evacuation and Repatriation coverage, as detailed below.
- 5% Health Insurance Administrative Fee: Calculated as 5% of the total cost of Medical Insurance + Evacuation and Repatriation coverage.

Student Medical Insurance
All students enrolled at UT Austin with an immigration status of F- or J- are required to hold active medical insurance coverage that meets requirements established by the University of Texas Board of Regents.

Student Evacuation & Repatriation
All students enrolled at UT Austin with an immigration status of F- or J- are required to hold active Evacuation and Repatriation insurance coverage. Evacuation and Repatriation policies provide coverage for expenses for students or their families in the event of series injury, illness or death.
Eligible students who wish to waive enrollment in UT SHIP based on their own existing health insurance policies are required to provide proof of adequate Student Evacuation and Repatriation coverage, or they must purchase this coverage through Academic Health Plans (AHP) in order for waivers to be approved.
