What You Need to Know
- You can intern during the summer or a semester.
- All internships are part of a comprehensive program based in a city abroad.
- Some programs combine an internship with coursework.
- Placement matches prioritize students’ skill development.
- Most students intern at small, local companies or organizations.
- Most programs offer English-language placements.
- Internships are unpaid, but scholarships can help offset the cost of travel.
- Internships with Coursework
All internship programs with coursework include credit-bearing classes. Depending on the program, this may range from a full academic load of major-specific courses to a single internship seminar. Students will take courses at the exchange host university or through the sponsoring affiliated program.
If you want to meet an internship requirement for your major, minor, or certificate through a program abroad, your department ultimately determines whether an internship abroad will transfer back to fulfill a major or minor the internship requirement. Consult your college’s website for specific criteria and requirements for an internship. Some colleges may also require a student to request pre-approval for your internship placement in order to count it toward a degree requirement.
The internship course itself will receive credit, as if it were a class. However, each college or department may have different course numbers. For example, a 20-hour per week internship at a museum could result in 3 hours of upper division Art History credit. Another example, a 20-hour per week internship at a non-profit focusing on human rights could result in credit for LA 320 or three hours of upper division Sociology credit. Students do not submit internship courses for evaluation but rather submit internship course syllabus and description of their work assignment through Course Electronic Verification Survey obtained by email via txglobal-credit@austin.utexas.edu after the program start.
- Internships without Coursework
UT Austin does not award internship credit for completing a non-academic internship. You earn credit for a course which complements your internship experience. Because these programs do not include coursework which complements the internship (complementary courses), no credit is automatically attached. However, all programs are “credit-eligible,” meaning you can enroll in the UT internship course of your choice to earn credit for the experience of your international internship.
Make sure you talk to your Academic Advisor if you need an internship for your degree. They will guide you on any departmental policies. Consult your college’s website for specific criteria and requirements for an internship. Some colleges may also require a student to request pre-approval for your internship placement in order to count it toward a degree requirement.

UT Internship Courses

If you want to earn credit but do not have a required internship course within your department, consider:
- UEX Internship Courses
These courses are designed for interns who do not need in-residence credit and do not want to pay the full cost for summer tuition. - TCE Internships & Career Experiences Course
This internship course is free for all undergraduate and graduate students. Students do not earn credit, but this course will appear on your official UT transcript.
