Applying to U.S. Universities

We know that for many of you, your ultimate goal is to study at The University of Texas at Austin or another university in the U.S. The following information will help you understand what attendance at the English Language Center can do to help you in this process.

Conditional Admission

Attending the English Language Center does not guarantee admission into The University of Texas at Austin. At The University of Texas at Austin, there is no such thing as conditional admission at the undergraduate level.

At the graduate level, individual departments make admissions decisions. Some graduate programs provide conditional admission, but you must negotiate this directly with the department.

When Am I Ready for Admission?

Readiness for admission depends on a variety of factors. Each of you has an English Language Center staff member assigned to you for help with the application process. For sponsored students, this person is the sponsored student advisor for your specific country. For non-sponsored students, it is the coordinator of your respective program (AEP or ELP).

English Language Center Courses and Credits/University Extension

English Language Center courses do not count for credit towards a degree at The University of Texas at Austin. They do, however, count as credit towards a full-time course load for immigration and employment purposes. Students who successfully complete level 5 of the ELP program or level 3 of the AEP program have the option of taking one or two University Extension courses as part of their English Language Center enrollment. These are regular undergraduate courses offered in the evenings for non-matriculated students. The credits for these courses can be used towards a degree once the student is admitted to The University of Texas at Austin.

TOEFL/IELTS Waiver for Austin Community College (ACC) and St. Edwards University (SEU)

If you have successfully completed level 7 of the ELP program or level 4 of the AEP program, ACC and SEU have agreed to allow English Language Center students to apply without submitting a TOEFL/IELTS score. They will test your English after you are admitted to their programs, and they may require more English coursework after admission, but you do not need to have a TOEFL/IELTS score before applying. To receive the waiver, you should come to the main English Language Center reception desk and ask for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver letter for ACC or SEU.
