Applying to U.S. Universities

We know that for many of you, your ultimate goal is to study at The University of Texas at Austin or another university in the U.S. The following information will help you understand what attendance at the English Language Center can do to help you in this process.

Conditional Admission

Attending the English Language Center does not guarantee admission to The University of Texas at Austin. The University of Texas at Austin does not offer conditional admission at the undergraduate level.

At the graduate level, individual departments make admissions decisions. Some graduate programs provide conditional admission, but you must negotiate this directly with the department.

When Am I Ready for Admission?

Readiness for admission depends on a variety of factors. Each of you has an English Language Center staff member assigned to you for help with the application process. For sponsored students, this person is the sponsored student advisor for your specific country. For non-sponsored students, it is the coordinator of your respective program (AEP or ELP).

English Language Center Courses and Credits

English Language Center courses do not count for credit towards a degree at The University of Texas at Austin. They do, however, count as credit towards a full-time course load for immigration and employment purposes.

TOEFL/IELTS Waiver for Austin Community College (ACC)

If you have successfully completed ELP level 7 or AEP level 4 with grades of A or B, ACC has agreed to allow English Language Center students to apply without submitting a TOEFL/IELTS score. They will test your English after you are admitted and may require more English coursework, but you do not need to have a TOEFL/IELTS score before applying. You may email us to request the waiver letter; note that we will need to verify level and final grades before issuance.
