Global Professional Training: East and Southeast Asia

About Global Professional Training: East and Southeast Asia

Established in 2016, Global Professional Training: East and Southeast Asia (GPT Asia) is an intercultural program for students interested in pursuing international careers, especially in East and Southeast Asia. GPT Asia includes a symposium and ongoing professional development workshops during the academic year to develop students’ cross-cultural professional skills, build a globally-minded student network, and celebrate cultures across the region. Texas Global is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Judy Bollinger for their generous support in making this program possible and free to all students.

The goal of the symposium is for students to gain:

  • A stronger cultural and historical knowledge of East and Southeast Asia and its current affairs.
  • An understanding of communication and professional skills necessary to succeed in new cultural settings.
  • Knowledge of and strategies for identifying emerging industries and professional opportunities across East and Southeast Asia.
  • A network of peers, professionals, and academics with interests and experiences in the region.

Professional Development Workshops

Following the symposium in January, GPT Asia's intercultural programming continues throughout the spring semester through a professional development workshop series. These evening workshops provide access to seasoned professionals and academic expertise in East and Southeast Asia. These sessions are also open to students who may have been unable to participate in the symposium but have educational or career interests in the region.

Student Ambassadors and Events Committee

Students are recognized as Student Ambassadors when they attend the symposium and at least one professional development workshop during the spring semester. Additional opportunities may arise to engage in exchange programs and local events with international visitors. Student Ambassadors are eligible to join the Events Committee in the following academic year.

The goal of the Student Ambassador Events Committee is to ensure that GPT Asia remains a student-driven program. The committee is made up of Student Ambassadors and Texas Global staff, and they meet in the fall semester to plan the content for spring programming. Student Ambassadors brainstorm symposium topics, promote the event across campus, and serve as support staff and emcees the day of the symposium. Serving on the Events Committee is a valuable way to develop leadership skills and gain hands-on experience in event planning.

As someone who hopes to work in Asia one day, GPT’s programing has made me more aware of the opportunities and the potential I have with not only exploring a career abroad, but also a different lifestyle.
