UT-France Endowment Funds Binational Environmental Policy Research

  • Sep 22, 2020

The Dr. Cécile Dewitt-Morette France-UT Endowed Excellence Fund has awarded a grant to associate professor of government Rachel L. Wellhausen for environmental policy research in collaboration with associate professor of American studies Jean-Baptiste Velut of the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris.

Wellhausen and her French colleagues will explore trends in international waste exportation policies and their impact on global health and the environment. The research will be used to shed light on how a country’s waste regulations can have a detrimental impact in other regions—an ongoing issue in the U.S. and around the world.

This is the second round of research funded by the Dr. Cécile Dewitt-Morette France-UT Endowed Excellence Fund. Named in honor of famous late mathematician, physicist and renowned UT Austin professor Cécile DeWitt-Morette, the fund was established in 2018 and sponsored by The Embassy of France in the United States to foster academic collaboration between UT Austin and institutions of higher learning in France in all fields of study.

“This initiative embodies UT Austin’s robust global engagement efforts and the rich partnerships between our faculty and their international peers,” said Sonia Feigenbaum, senior vice provost for global engagement and chief international officer. “The result of these collaborations will enhance linkages between UT and leading institutions in France, contributing invaluable research that is applicable locally and globally.”

The next grant cycle will be announced in fall 2021.
