UT Austin Staff and Alumni in Monterrey Gather to Create Impact

Prominent Mexican alumni and friends of the University of Texas at Austin gathered recently in Monterrey to reconnect with each other and staff from their alma mater and to strategize on ways to bring Austin and Monterrey closer.
Justin Michalka, Executive Director of International Advancement, and Darcy McGillicuddy, Director of External Relations at Texas Global, kicked off a full agenda of meetings with Carlos Ross (B.S. ’70, M.S ’71), partner at the Center for Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and former president of the Texas Exes Monterrey Chapter, at Parque de Investigacion e Innovacion Tecnologica. A visit to the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) Law School with Dean Fernando Gonda followed.
The highlight of the trip was an alumni reception that brought together more than 30 attendees including several past presidents of the Texas Exes Monterrey Chapter, including Carlos Ross, Ana Trevino (B.A. ’13), Raul Ewald (M.B.A ’94), Alfonso Moreno (M.B.A ’75), David Kane (M.B.A ’83), and current president, Rodolfo Madero.
Alumni gathered at the reception to network and discuss their experiences at UT Austin, as well as collaboration with Texas Global toward increased engagement and strengthening of relationships between UT Austin and Mexico.
The event was organized and hosted by Carlos and Clara Quintanilla, whose leadership and support continue to play a significant role in the strengthening of collaboration between UT Austin and Mexico. In 2013, the Quintanillas created an endowed scholarship for students of Mexican heritage who wish to pursue a degree in the Cockrell School of Engineering.
“I am passionate about deepening the relationship between UT Austin and Mexico and am happy to help continually engage alumni in Mexico and facilitate partnerships with UT Austin,” said Carlos Quintanilla.
The Quintanilla family’s support of Texas Global has helped facilitate greater student mobility between UT Austin and Mexico.
Texas Global is working with partner institutions across Mexico to bring more Mexican students to UT Austin to study and research. Similarly, we have introduced several new study abroad programs in Mexico as part of our Strategic Regions Initiative and commitment to Generation Study Abroad.
UT Austin and Mexico have a long history of collaboration. Texas Global is committed to building on that history to strengthen our relationships in Mexico. Our close economic ties, shared border, history, interests, and opportunities for collaboration propel us to pursue even greater and more robust collaboration. With the support of our alumni and friends, we are confident our efforts will greatly benefit the university community, faculty, and students.
