Sixteen current and former Texas student-athletes returned from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with medals, including six gold, seven silver and three bronze. The 16 podium appearances represent the Longhorns’ fourth-most medals earned at an Olympic Games since 2004, when 21 Longhorns earned medals in Athens.

If UT athletes had competed as a country in the 2024 Games, current and former Longhorns would have ranked No. 16 among all nations in the medal count — five medals ahead of Sweden and two medals behind Spain, while tying for No. 14 with Hungary for gold medals.

Texas’ storied Olympic history now features 214 current and former UT student-athletes representing 38 countries who have produced 178 Olympic medals, including 98 gold, 53 silver and 27 bronze.

Texas’ performance in Paris marks the 11th-consecutive Summer Olympics in which at least one Longhorn emerged as a gold medalist, dating back to the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and the 13th-straight Games that featured a medalist since the 1976 Montreal Games.

Three current student-athletes claimed medals, including rising junior Hubert Kos of Hungary, who returns to the Forty Acres with a gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke. Rising sophomore Erin Gemmell anchored Team USA’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay en route to silver, and a burnt-orange trio — rising senior Luke Hobson and former Longhorns Carson Foster and Drew Kibler — took silver for Team USA in the men’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Hobson also returned with a bronze in the 200-meter freestyle, while Foster took bronze in the 400-meter individual medley.

Former Longhorns who struck gold include: Kevin Durant, who became the first men's basketball player in Olympic history to win four gold medals; Julien Alfred of St. Lucia, who was the first to finish in the 100-meter before also claiming silver in the 200-meter; Scottie Scheffler in men’s golf; Ryan Crouser, who became the first shot putter in Olympics history to win three gold medals; and Tara Davis-Woodhall in long jump.

Former Longhorn Leo Neuebauer took silver for Germany in the men’s decathlon while Caspar Corbeau earned bronze for the Netherlands in the 200-meter breaststroke. After earning gold in Tokyo in 2020, former Longhorn Chiaka Ogbogu played a major role in Team USA’s silver finish in Paris.

The slew of Longhorn medalists comes after current and former Longhorn athletes dominated the 2024 Olympic trials, securing a total of 37 spots in Paris. Thirty student and alumni athletes and seven coaches with ties to UT Athletics participated in the 2024 Olympic Games. This marks the 21st consecutive Summer Games that have included a current or former Longhorn athlete since the 1936 Berlin Games.

The 30 athletes competing set a record for the largest delegation UT Austin has sent to the Olympics, topping the previous best of 29 athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The 14 UT athletes and three coaches with current UT Austin ties come from 12 different Longhorn sports programs, including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, rowing, soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, men's and women's track and field, and women’s indoor volleyball.

Athletes from UT Austin represented 16 different countries: Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Haiti, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Lucia, Serbia, South Sudan, Taiwan and the United States.
