Torrey was born in Tyler, Texas but grew up in Singapore, where he spent his formative childhood years and received his primary education. After receiving his high school diploma from Tyler Legacy High (formerly Robert E. Lee High School) in Tyler, he began his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University in scenic Provo, Utah, before transferring to and graduating summa cum laude from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with departmental highest honors, having obtained a B.A. in philosophy with a minor in classics. From 2010 to 2014, he was enrolled in PhD studies in philosophy at University of Notre Dame, receiving his M.A. in philosophy in 2013.

Torrey’s experience in the broad field of international education encompasses diverse roles in admissions and student advising, starting with University of Notre Dame (2014), Indiana University South Bend (2015-17), The University of Texas at Tyler (2017-21), and, as of December 2021, UT Austin.

When not spending time with his son, Torrey likes to play tennis, jog, curate NFTs to add to his growing digital art collection, daabble with blockchain technology, and teach himself programming (Python and JavaScript in particular).
