Dr. Chiho Sawada

Assistant Director for Intercultural Programs and Initiatives

Dr. Sawada comes to us from UT Austin’s Texas Career Engagement, where he was assistant director of internships and career experiences. Before he arrived in Austin, Chiho was an associate professor of History and Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of Global Studies and Intercultural Peace Studies minors. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of California, San Diego, as well as a master’s degree in Regional Studies and a doctorate in East Asian Languages and Civilizations, both from Harvard. He is proficient in Japanese and has experience with Korean and Chinese.

In his free time, Chiho enjoys relaxing at the beach, reading (both nonfiction and fiction), watching movies, collecting vintage audio gear, and exploring Texas. For example, during winter break, he and his partner headed to the Rio Grande Valley for birdwatching and tamales. As for furry companions, Chiho loved dogs growing up but has recently converted to Team Cat.
