UT Ranks No. 3 for Number of Students Studying Abroad

The University of Texas at Austin ranks third in the nation among all U.S. universities for the number of students studying abroad, according to the 2019 Open Doors Report released this week by the Institute of International Education.

The Open Doors Report, compiled by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, is a comprehensive survey of international exchange activity in the U.S. and the most widely-referenced measure of U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit and international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education in the U.S.
The 2019 Open Doors Report analyzed data from the 2017-18 academic year and found that 3,293 UT students studied abroad on credit-bearing programs. This was an increase from 3,129 during the 2016-2017 academic year, resulting in UT rising from fourth to third among leading institutions for study abroad participation. When taking into account both credit and non-credit bearing activities, UT sent 4,421 students abroad in 2017-18.
The study also finds that UT Austin is a leading host institution for international students, ranking No. 34 among all U.S. universities enrolling international students.
The release of the 2019 Open Doors Report marks the start of International Education Week, which celebrates the transformative value and impact of international education. During the week, UT Austin will showcase the diversity, breadth and depth of global engagement on campus through a wide range of events and programs for students, scholars, faculty and staff.
