Since the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was founded in 2002 by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves, press freedom in the region has faced mounting pressure. Press freedom in the Americas has fallen 14 points in Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index since 2022, and at least 17 journalists were killed in Latin America in 2025. Moderated by Alves, this webinar brings together leading voices from the Inter American Press Association, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders and Guatemala’s Agencia Ocote to look back at a quarter century of challenges and resilience, and to ask what comes next for journalism in the Americas.

Panelists include:

  • Carlos Lauría, Executive Director, Inter American Press Association
  • Cristina Zahar, Program coordinator for Latin America/Carribean, Committee to Protect Journalists
  • Artur Romeu, Director of Reporters Without Borders' Latin America Office
  • Alejandra Gutiérrez Valdizán, Co-founder and director of Agencia Ocote (Guatemala)
