For:
UT Students, Faculty, Staff, and the General Public
Location:
Please join the South Asia Institute for their Kannada Studies Talk during International Education Week!
This talk features an introduction to Chittara and the lifestyle of the Deevaru community who are refined practitioners of the art. It is a glimpse into the book Deevara Chittara: the Artform, the People, their Culture - the first and the only book to visually archive and document Chittara and related eco-friendly handicrafts. The talk will inform the reader about the various facets of the artform such as its intricacies, symbolism, coherence with nature, integral link with social customs and the role of women in sustaining it. Along with a critical enquiry about the artistically interwoven lifestyle of the Deevaru community, the talk will also initiate discussions about preserving dying indigenous art practices by incorporating them in contemporary lives.
A small reception will begin at 12 Noon with the talk officially starting at 12:30 p.m.
