For:
UT Students, Faculty, Staff and the General Public
Location:
As part of International Education Week and in celebration of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ 25th anniversary, the Knight Center will host a special screening of the documentary AMA: The Memory of Time, about the 1932 peasant uprising in El Salvador that led to violent repression of the Indigenous community.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker and poet Daniel Flores y Ascencio.
The documentary tells the story of José Feliciano Ama, a Nawat-Pipil leader, spiritual guide, and cacique who was accused of leading a communist revolt in El Salvador in 1932. Through the perspective of his nephew, Don Juan Ama, and his efforts to clear José Feliciano Ama’s name, the film explores Indigenous resistance and the preservation of Indigenous memory.
