About Global Professional Training: East & Southeast Asia

Established in 2010, Global Professional Training: East & Southeast Asia (GPT Asia) includes an in-person symposium and student-led intercultural programming throughout the year with the goal of developing students' cross-cultural professional skills, building a globally minded student network and celebrating cultures across the region. This internationally focused experience is designed for students interested in pursuing international careers, especially in East and Southeast Asia. Students participate in specialized dialogues about the region and develop marketable professional skills while exploring careers and relevant UT courses and programs related to the region.

The goal of the symposium is for students to gain:

  • A stronger cultural and historical knowledge of East and Southeast Asia and its current affairs.
  • An understanding of communication and professional skills necessary to succeed in new cultural settings.
  • Knowledge of and strategies for identifying emerging industries and professional opportunities across East and Southeast Asia.
  • A network of peers, professionals, and academics with interests and experiences in the region.

Student Ambassadors

To extend learning beyond the annual symposium, attendees may join the GPT Asia Student Ambassadors. This group engages in intercultural programming throughout the spring semester, including but not limited to participating in local exchange programs with international visitors, globally oriented career development, and workshops with relevant professionals.

Student Ambassadors who remain enrolled at UT have the option to join the Student Ambassador Events Committee in the following academic year. This group collaborates with Texas Global staff to create the next symposium by brainstorming relevant topics and serving as event staff.

If you have attended a GPT Asia and are interested in becoming a Student Ambassador, please email gpt@austin.utexas.edu.

GPT [is] a really great way to make global friendships. I'm from South America, so I already know a lot about Latin American cultures and I've been to Europe, but it didn't really spark an interest in me. I like learning about developing countries and I’ve always looked towards Asia.
