UT Austin supports over 3,000 first-generation college students annually. These students, like others, make up the fabric of the University. We recognize their unique needs and seek to provide support so they too can experience an international opportunity during their four-year degree. Our two signature planning scholarship programs address one of the primary challenges students face – confirming funding BEFORE selecting a study abroad program.
Hutchison International Scholars
Hutchison International Scholars is a unique program aimed at reducing financial barriers and encouraging students to consider international education as part of their college selection process. Endowed funds enabled us to create this program which identifies first-generation college students during to their admission process to UT Austin. The scholarship provides students with $4,000 to use during their four years at UT.
- $120,000 allocated annually
- 60 students randomly selected in equal representation of college enrollment
- Special events and advising resources
- Unique Freshman Interest Group (FIG) optional
First Abroad Scholars
Each fall first-generation college students attending UT Austin are encouraged to apply for the First Abroad Scholarship. Students are eligible to apply prior to completing 60 credits. Once awarded, funds are available for use beginning in the following fall for two years. The planning aspect of this scholarship encourages students to map out their semesters and select the appropriate coursework that advances them toward graduation. We award 25 students $3,000 each annually.
Many of our partner programs offer matching scholarships of between $1,000-$2,000 to firs-generation in college students as well as Pell recipients. Students should speak with their Education Abroad Program Coordinator for details.
